Councilor

Delta Chapter

Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society

Dear Eugene:

It gives me great pleasure to nominate for membership in Alpha Omega Alpha Giuseppe N. Colasurdo, M.D., Dean of the Medical School and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics.     Dr. Colasurdo has distinguished himself as a physician, researcher, educator, and administrator and embodies the ideals to which we aspire as an institution and that we strive to instill in our students and trainees.

After graduating summa cum laude from G. D’Annunzio School of Medicine in Chieti, Italy, Dr. Colasurdo completed a residency at UTMB and then a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology at the University of Colorado’s National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver.  Board certified in both pediatrics and in pediatric pulmonology, he joined our faculty in 1995 as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine.   He became division head in 1997, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics in 2005, and Dean of the Medical School in 2007.  He also serves as Physician-in-Chief of Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.   He specializes in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pediatric asthma, and other lung disorders in infants and children and maintains an active clinical practice.

Dr. Colasurdo has published more than 120 manuscripts, abstracts, book chapters, and review articles, and holds editorial reviewer positions on several scientific journals, including The American Journal of Physiology, The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and Pediatric Pulmonology.  He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and the Society of Pediatric Research.  The fellowship programs in both Pediatric Pulmonology and Pediatric Critical Care, developed under his leadership, have trained and graduated faculty members at a number of academic health centers.  He continues to teach residents, fellows, and medical students despite the many new duties he has acquired as dean.   His abiding interest in education inspired him recently to create a Division of Medical Education in the Department of Pediatrics to focus on new strategies and technologies for resident learning.     His analytical and research abilities are invaluable to his leadership of the clinical operations of both the Department of Pediatrics and now that of UT Physicians, where he insists on a best-practices and team-oriented approach that provide the underpinning for his current campaign for excellence in patient care.

He has received numerous awards, including the David W. Smith Trainee Award from the Western Society for Pediatric Research and the Basic Scientist Development Award from the National institutes of Health as well as the Dean’s Excellence Awards.

As a leader in his discipline, gifted clinician, inspiring educator, outstanding administrator, and role model,   Dr. Colasurdo would be a credit to Alpha Omega Alpha and an asset to our chapter.  I am proud to nominate him for this honor.

                                                                                                Sincerely yours,

                                                                                                A
