Medical Student Laptop Requirements

 

Overview

Medical students are required to have a laptop for access to educational materials, references, patient records, and for communication with faculty and medical staff.

Your laptop must have an Intel processor running at least Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Vista Ultimate/Home Premium, since the clinical information system cannot be accessed with a Macintosh computer. Students must have their laptops configured with the software needed for their medical education at the UTHSC-H Medical School. This configuration will occur during computer orientation.

Laptop Requirements

The minimum laptop requirements are as follows:

  • Intel Core2 Duo Processor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 60 GB Hard Drive
  • CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo
  • 1024X768 super VGA PCI Bus Video (128MB or higher)
  • Sound Card
  • Microsoft Mouse or Track Ball
  • 10/100 Network Interface Card
  • Wireless Card (802.11b/g)
  • Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
  • 1 or more USB ports
  • 3-year warranty
  • All critical Windows Updates applied prior to orientation

Mac OS X and Linux/Unix-like OSs are not allowed.
Laptops will be used during some university exams and are required to be Windows based.

Student Responsibilities Regarding Email

Students are responsible for monitoring e-mail from university faculty and administrators, which will be sent to an e-mail address issued by the school. (Messages forwarded to other accounts will not be allowed.)
