Robert W. Guynn , M.D.
Biography:
After graduating from Michigan State University, where he majored in chemistry, Dr. Guynn received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University of Medicine (Baltimore). After a year of general internal medicine at Case-Western Reserve University/Lakeside Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Guynn returned to Baltimore to begin his psychiatric residency at the Henry Phipps Clinic of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He then spent three years as a Clinical Fellow in the U.S. Public Health service, being assigned to the National Institutes of Mental Health. He spent the three years in Washington doing basic biochemical and metabolic research, especially focusing on the determination of the thermodynamics of enzyme catalyzed reactions and metabolic control. He continued these interests after becoming a junior faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas, Houston. His subsequent career has been entirely with the University of Texas Medical School, Houston. He was b Acting Chair and Chair from 1987 to 2007. He was also Director of the University of Texas Mental Sciences Institute and the Executive Director of the Harris County Psychiatric Center, a 250 bed hospital.
Dr. Guynn has published 56 papers in referred journals along with 14 chapters and 39 abstracts. He has been President of the Texas Research Society on Alcoholism and the Houston Psychiatric Society. He is a Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and the American College of Psychiatry and has been an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for many years. Currently he is chair of the Scientific Program Committee for the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association.
