Elizabeth Roseberry, M.D., '85

By Camille Webb

Elizabeth Roseberry, M.D.

Elizabeth Roseberry, M.D., a 1985 Medical School graduate, was born in the small college town of Athens, Ohio, but has moved all over the country since she was just 8 years old. She has lived in states including North Carolina, Oregon, West Virginia, Connecticut, Arizona, and Texas but now makes Marion, Ohio, her home. Definitely bitten by the travel bug, Dr. Roseberry seeks adventure and spends her spare time traveling the world. She has toured such far off places as the Mediterranean, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and England. She also plans a trip to the Galapagos Islands this fall.

She is a neonatologist in a level two nursery at a local hospital. Her side job as a locum tenens for a group of doctors allows her to pursue more challenging work in her field.

Why was it important for you to give back to the Medical School?

Not coming from a background of affluence at all, I know how difficult it is for some students to complete their education without some help. If I can try to help someone who would otherwise have to drop out, I want to do that.

Why did you choose to support student scholarships?

When I went through medical school, the tuition was very modest. The school was well supported by the state, but it has since had to raise tuition. It can still be very difficult for people to make it without having to borrow. I think it's better if you can avoid a huge debt after graduation.

Did you receive a scholarship as a student?

I received merit scholarships as an undergraduate. While at UT Medical School, the only thing I had to do was try to stay within my budget. I lived very modestly.

What message would you tell your fellow alumni about investing in the school?

I think that we should be cognizant in how different a climate it is now in terms of expenses. We really should directly support the students now, so that they can avoid so much financial distress after graduation.
