2012 Retreat

Tug of war is part of the fun of the Medical School Retreat.

It’s that time of year again! Faculty are invited to make the incoming Medical School class feel welcome at the annual Retreat, which is set for Aug. 17–18 at Camp Allen.

Hosted by the second-year class, this year’s theme is Heroes and Villains and is open to all students, faculty, and alumni. The Retreat features the Med Olympics, the Skit, and information for entering first-year students about life as a Medical School student.

For more information, and to register by Aug. 13, visit the Retreat website.

Space still available for border rotation

South Texas Environmental Education and Research logo

Space is still available for the September/October rotation of the South Texas Environmental Education and Research (STEER) Program, with scholarships of $300 available on a first-come/first-served basis.

Spend a month at the U.S.-Mexico Border. What you learn at STEER will last a lifetime! Enjoy an international experience without leaving home.

Tuition is free for students in U.S.-accredited schools of medicine and public health along the U.S.-Mexico border. Housing provided for only $600/month. Most schools give credit for STEER—some programs offer global health credit. Presenters are bilingual.

At present, the STEER students do not cross into Mexico. Nevertheless, the border provides a unique bicultural, bilingual learning environment, with a focus on the concerns of our nation’s border with Mexico—poverty, water and air pollution, immigration, sanitation, imports, the border “fence,” and a medically underserved population threatened by infectious diseases such as dengue, tuberculosis, and rabies, as well as high rates of obesity and diabetes.

STEER offers training in two locations: Laredo and Harlingen.

MedEdPORTAL introduces education directory

AAMC logo

The AAMC recently launched MedEdPORTAL 4.0, upgrading the existing website and introducing two additional services: the iCollaborative and the Continuing Education (CE) Directory.

The new MedEdPORTAL suite of services is a one-stop shop for peer-reviewed publications, innovative resources in development, and continuing education activities in medical education. The iCollaborative is a non-peer reviewed venue to share innovative resources, including effective practices, policies and guidelines, and educational resources and assessment tools in development. The CE Directory provides a centralized collection of evidenced-based online courses aimed at providing health professionals with continuing education credits.
