Dean Giuseppe Colasurdo will host a Town Hall Meeting April 27 to give updates and answer questions regarding the state of the Medical School.

The meeting will be held at noon in MSB 3.001 and at LBJ, COS 101, via live webcast (room change from Room 210). All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be available for the first 100 and the first 20 at LBJ.

Questions may be submitted in advance to med.dean@uth.tmc.edu.

Psychiatry team seeks second Mind Games trophy

The Medical School’s psychiatry resident team is working to retain their title of Mind Games champions by participating in the upcoming 2009 competition sponsored by the American Psychiatric Association.

The residency team won the 2008 competition, and this year’s team made up of general psychiatry residents — Dr. Peter Ly, PGY-III psychiatry resident; Dr. Tanya Krolls, PGY-II psychiatry resident; and Dr. Elizabeth Truong, PGY-I psychiatry resident — has been named one of the top three teams in the nation.

As national finalists, the team has won a trip to American Psychiatric Association’s Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA, to compete in the 2009 Mind Games competition May 19.

Art Wall seeks submissions by June 10

Artists wanting their work considered for the Art Wall's Fall Exhibit must submit work by June 10. Up to five submissions from an artist (any medium except three-dimensional) can be considered for one exhibit.

To submit, get the entry form/regulations from www.uthoustonartwall.org. Click on "Submit," then select "Download the Art Wall Brochure." The regulations are specified in the entry form. Submit electronically to ms.artwall@uth.tmc.edu or deliver by hand to the Office of Communications, MSB B.340. All employees and their families are eligible to submit art.

Lone Star Stampede & Children’s Fun Run set for May 2

Lone Star Stampede

The Lone Star Stampede 10K, 5K & Children’s Run, set for 7:55 a.m., May 2, will begin at the School of Nursing at 6901 Bertner.

This fun family event, co-sponsored by the Texas Exes Houston Chapter and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, helps provide scholarships for deserving Houston-area high school students attending UT system schools.

AAMC seeks awards nominations

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is seeking nominations for major awards honoring individuals and programs making significant contributions to the academic medicine community.

The following awards will be presented at the association's annual meeting, Nov. 6-11, in Boston:

  • The Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education is the highest honor that academic medicine presents for sustained contributions to American medical education. The award is a medal and a cash prize of $10,000.
  • The Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Awards recognize the significant contributions to medical education made by gifted teachers. Each awardee receives $10,000; the awardee's institution receives $2,500; and the awardee's AOA chapter receives $1,000.
  • The Award for Distinguished Research in the Biomedical Sciences recognizes exceptional research discoveries. The recipient receives a $5,000 award and a crystal presentation piece.
  • The David E. Rogers Award is granted to a medical school faculty member who has made major contributions to improving the health and health care of the American people. The recipient receives a $10,000 award and a crystal presentation piece.
  • The Herbert W. Nickens Award is granted annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to promoting justice in medical education and health care. The recipient receives a $10,000 award and a crystal presentation piece.
  • The Humanism in Medicine Award recognizes a physician faculty member who exemplifies the qualities of a caring and compassionate mentor to medical students. The awardee receives $5,000; an additional $1,000 is given to the Organization of Student Representatives at the recipient's medical school.
  • The Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service recognizes longstanding, major institutional commitment to addressing community needs. The winner receives an engraved crystal presentation piece.

Nominations for all awards are due May 1.

Dr. Gary Rosenfeld, professor of integrative biology and pharmacology and assistant dean for educational programs, recently was elected as chair-elect of the AAMC Southern Group on Educational Affairs (SGEA). He will assume the position of chairman in 2011. Rosenfeld also was recently selected to be a member of the AAMC advisory committee (MR5) that will conduct the fifth comprehensive review of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
