New application process launched for senior "away" electives

A new system that streamlines the application process for students who are interested in taking electives at other U.S. medical schools was launched by the AAMC on April 1. The Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) allows seniors to submit just one application for multiple schools, significantly reducing paperwork and improving efficiency. The program is available initially to medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and opened for student use on April 15. During this pilot year, a mix of 10 private and public schools from different geographic areas are participating as VSAS host schools. Other schools will continue to use their own application system, but any students applying for electives at the host schools will use VSAS software. The application fee for students is $35 for the first school applied to and $15 for each additional school. Next year there will be annual fees for both home and host schools. Planned future enhancements for VSAS include an interface for faculty members to approve and schedule electives, inclusion of osteopathic students, and the incorporation of electronic evaluations.

Psychiatry residents are tops in “Mind Games”

Three general psychiatry residents have been named national finalists for the 2008 Mind Games, sponsored by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Dr. Tanya Krolls, PGY-I psychiatry resident; Dr. Peter Ly, PGY-II psychiatry resident; and Dr. Magdalena Peixoto, PGY-III psychiatry resident, were named one of the top three resident teams in the nation.

As national finalists, the team wins a trip to the APA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., to compete in the final 2008 Mind Games competition. The three final teams will compete for the national trophy in front of a live audience at the annual meeting May 6, with the winner taking home the national trophy.

“Everyone in the Department of Psychiatry and at The University of Texas and across the nation is very proud of this group’s fantastic accomplishments,” said Dr. Pedro Ruiz, interim chair of the department. “Let’s all wish this talented group of residents all the success in winning the final competition at the 2008 Mind Games.”


Camp counselors needed for Camp Ailihpomeh

Volunteer male counselors aged 18 years and up, who are energetic, sociable, enthusiastic, open-minded, enjoy camp experiences, and are willing to lead a team of children in many activities are being recruited for Camp Ailihpomeh.

Camp Ailihpomeh (hemophilia spelled backwards), a summer camp for boys with bleeding disorders, takes place July 19-25. The camp is sponsored by the Gulf State Hemophilia and Thrombophilia Center and takes place in Bosque County.

Art Wall artist reception May 2

Ice cream is on the agenda at the May 2 Meet the Artists reception at the Medical School Art Wall.

Artists featured in the summer exhibit include Jayasimha Murthy, Mauricio Salicru, Saurabh Sanon, Christine Smith, Jessica Turpin, and Stephen Walston. This exhibit features the art from two children of Medical School employees.

The reception to meet the artists will begin at noon. Ice cream available for the first 50 guests.

 

Cartoonist to visit TMC May 2

Jorge Cham, PHD Comics creator, is visiting the Texas Medical Center Friday, May 2. The M. D. Anderson Alumni and Faculty Association, in collaboration with The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston Graduate Student Association, is sponsoring the visit, which includes seminar and book signing.

The seminar, "Power of Procrastination,” begins at 2 p.m., Friday, May 2 at Robert C. Hickey Auditorium at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Immediately following the seminar, there will be a reception and book signing in the foyer. This event is open to the public.
