Resident and new parentsThe UTHSC-H Medical School offers two fully accredited four-year residency programs in Obstetrics & Gynecology. The Memorial Hermann program was orignally accredited in June of 1942. The program at LBJ General Hospital was accredited in July 1989. The essential difference between these two progams is merely the primary training hospital. Residents from both programs work on specialized services at each location and share faculty exposure. This mixture of patients affords the resident physician to see many common clinical problems but also some very unique and rare medical conditions as well. The residents provide comprehensive obstetrical care, as well as evaluation and treatment of all disorders of the female reproductive tract. We manage many "high risk" pregnancies in close collaboration with our Maternal-Fetal Medicine colleagues. Our Labor and Delivery unit is one of the best in the state and one of the faculty and several residents are available in-house 24 hours a day to manage any obstetrical emergency. We also have access 24 hours a day to Maternal-Fetal Medicine consultation. The goal of these programs is to provide a unique blend of traditional didactics and mentorship coupled with state-of-the-art learning, which utilizes simulation labs and interactive computer-based learning. The training program is designed to prepare graduates for general private practice or as the foundation for subspecialty fellowship training. Residents will have a comprehensive exposure to all aspects of ob/gyn, including the various subspecialties. It is expected that residents will participate in all aspects of reproductive medicine to the level specified by the Ob/Gyn Residency Review Committee as well as the CREOG learning objectives.
