Artist: Soraya Thompson
To Soraya Thompson,
photography represents a process
of awareness, exploration and
engagement. Reflections within,
from images without, not only seize
experiences forever but also drive
the experience of life itself—to
create meaning and a connection to
the passage of daily, mundane
moments. That serves both as
Soraya's fuel and reward in
photography.
The beauty she searches for is, to her inner eye, synonymous with the truth, the truth within the core of any subject matter—be it a stone, a staircase or a human figure. The aesthetic ideal manifests itself in many guises, its embodiment at times juxtaposed against its external, physical parameters. But the rough and uncouth, the old and abandoned, the unadorned and bare emanate their own melodies as compositional sources for the camera's viewfinder.
Soraya's employment at UTMSH has provided her with the framework needed to grow as a photographer. Her non-exempt "day job" allows her to have the time, albeit limited, to pursue her artistic goals without the constraints of financial uncertainty. She is grateful to be part of this wonderful academic community.
